Introduction

This course is designed to develop basic knowledgebase in infectious diseases in the society, in contexts of causation, impacts, diagnosis and epidemiolog

Objectives

(a) To acquire knowledge in the interaction between microbes and the society
(b) To appreciate the scope, dimension and strategy of health protection as regards infectious diseases threats
(c) To update on emerging infections and their relevance to public health practice

Course layout and Contents
  • The Course would be conducted in ten sessions. Course contents are delivered in lectures, group exercises and tutorial.

    The topics include:

    • An integrated response to Infectious diseases
    • Microbes, infection, immunity and society
    • Microorganisms of public health interest
    • Microbiology for beginners*
    • Vaccines and vaccination
    • Introduction to infectious disease epidemiology
    • Outbreak investigation and risk communication
    • Surveillance and information management
    • Principles and practice of infection control
    • Diagnostic methodology and interpretation

    *optional tutorial session – can be omitted by students (e.g. medical and nursing) who have completed undergraduate courses in microbiology.

Course Assessment
Final assessment would compose of
  • Examination: MC questions (80%)
  • Attendance (20%)
Students are required to obtain a ‘satisfactory pass’ in the assessment. Upon satisfying these requirements, the “Certificate of Completion” will be awarded.
Students who attended at least 75% of the sessions but did not take the assessment would be awarded a “Certificate of Attendance” instead.

Admission Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in medicine or an approved related field. For non-professional degree holders, honours not lower than second class are required.

The application form should be completed and returned at least TWO weeks before the programme commences.

Applicants will be notified of the application result when the programme concerned has made its decision.

Students are required to pay full tuition fee before the course commence. The tuition fee, once paid, is non-refundable or non-transferable.
