Introduction
Students would be introduced to the principles and practice of infection control in three settings – hospital and clinic, laboratory and the community, through a series of lectures tailored to the needs of public health professionals. The emphasis would be on the development of a systematic approach to infection control practice.

Course layout and Contents
  • The Course would be conducted in nine weekly sessions. Course contents are delivered in lectures, tutorial and demonstration.

    The topics include:

    • Universal precaution and transmission based precautions
    • Disinfection and sterilisation
    • Engineering design for isoltaion and operation theatre
    • Use of PPE
    • Infection control in (I) special hosts and (II) community and special environment
    • Vaccination of health care workers
    • Post-exposure prophylaxis against HIV and bloodborne infections
    • Laboratory safety
    • Antimicrobial resistance (I) mechanism; (II) containment programmes
    • Surveillance in infection contro (I) programme design and data collection; (II) data analysis and presentation
    • Outbreak management (I) case finding and control measures; (II) case contyrol studies and root cause analysis

  • Professionals working in public health organizations, disease control agencies, and field situations, who seek to acquire knowledge about infection control in health care settings, laboratory and the community.

Course Assessment
Final assessment would compose of
  • Examination: short questions (70%)
  • Attendance (30%)
Students are required to obtain a ‘satisfactory pass’ in the assessment. Upon satisfying these requirements, the “Certificate of Completion” will be awarded.
Students who attended at least 70% of the sessions but did not take the assessment would be awarded a “Certificate of Attendance” instead.

Admission Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in medicine or an approved related field. For non-professional degree holders, honours not lower than second class are required.

One photocopy of certificates of academic/professional qualifications (e.g. Diploma or other qualifications) together with the application form. Original documents must NOT be sent.

The application form should be completed and returned at least TWO weeks before the programme commences.

Selection Process

Applicants will be notified of the application result when the programme concerned has made its decision.

Students are required to pay full tuition fee before the course commence. The tuition fee, once paid, is non-refundable or non-transferable.
