Introduction |
|
Public health practice and research requires an understanding of the temporal-spatial distribution of health, diseases, risk factors, social economic conditions, and environmental attributes. Geographic Information System (GIS) is an important tool for mapping and supporting the analysis of the interrelationships of the implicated factors. In addition to revealing previously uncharacterised health patterns, GIS also offers an alternative 'picture' to that of a spreadsheet, chart or report summary. Interest in GIS has grown tremendously over the years, and is becoming a catalyst for facilitating inter-disciplinary research for addressing public health issues in perspective.
The Application of GIS in public health is a new course for introducing GIS to the health care field. The Course is developed jointly by the Stanley Ho Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases. It aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills for applying GIS in a diversity of public health fields, including epidemiology, social medicine, health service delivery and policy development. |

Objectives |
|
The Course is designed to enable participants to:
- Understand the principles and capabilities of GIS
- Acquire knowledge in the application of GIS in public health practice and research
- Develop basic skills in the organisation and utilization of spatial data for epidemiology and other public health applications

Course layout and Contents |
|
The Course is conducted in sessions spreading over seven weeks. Hands-on practice under supervision and interactions during classes would be the main features of the programme. Course contents are delivered in lectures, practical (computer laboratory), group exercise and seminar.
The lectures introduce basic principles of GIS and its application in public health. There are two lecture sessions:
Lecture Session I (2h)
- Introduction to GIS and spatial data
Lecture Session II (2h)
- Disease mapping and spatial epidemiology
The laboratory sessions are computer sessions organised to provide opportunities to develop hands-on skills. There are a total of six laboratory sessions:
Laboratory I (3h)
- Introduction to ArcGIS
- Understanding geocoding
Laboratory II (3h)
- Data editing
- Thematic mapping
Laboratory III (3h)
- Geoprocessing
- Map production
Laboratory A - I (To be confirmed) (8h)
Students must attend three small-group laboratory sessions from scheduled dates to practise in the use of GIS software and work on their group projects. It should be noted that each group should have at most three students and only a maximum of 2 groups are allowed to join in each laboratory session.
A demonstration session (2h) is organised to introduce descriptive spatial analysis and to demonstrate supplementary and alternative GIS tools and software.
The course will feature a seminar (3h) including student presentations of their group projects and presentations that would be given by specialists on the application of GIS in public health and epidemiology.

Course Assessment |
|
Final assessment would compose of
- Examination composing of multiple choices and short questions (50%)
- Group project and presentation (40%)
- Participation (10%)
Students are required to obtain a ‘satisfactory pass’ in the assessment. Upon satisfying these requirements, the “Certificate of Completion” will be awarded.
Students who attended at least 80% of the sessions but did not take the assessment would be awarded a “Certificate of Attendance” instead.
