Rationale

Emerging infectious diseases and new problems of existing infectious diseases continue to pose threat to the health of Hong Kong and the population of the world at large. Evidence required for effective control and prevention of infectious diseases include those on disease etiology, diagnosis, prognosis, and cost and benefits of treatment and public health intervention. Infectious disease epidemiology is concerned with the methodology of scientific investigations for control and prevention of infectious diseases.
This 5-day intensive module discusses major concepts in infectious disease epidemiology, outbreak detection and investigation, surveillance, risk factor studies, community level interventions and practical issues in study design and implementation.

Course Objectives

After completion of the course, the participants will be expected to:

  • Acquire knowledge in the epidemiological principles and concepts of infections
  • Discuss the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases and their implications for health practitioners
  • Have a basic understanding of the tools for the control of infectious diseases
  • Apply these tools in health programs for disease reduction or elimination
  • Evaluate intervention strategies for a range of infectious diseases
  • Be familiarized with recent advances in the understanding of important infectious diseases

Recognition

Certificate on Epidemiology and Control of Infectious Diseases will be offered by the School of Public Health, the Chinese University of Hong Kong if the participant fulfills the course requirements.

Assessment

Assessment will be in the form of attendance, exercises and written examination. Participants fulfilling the assessment requirements will be awarded the Certificate on Epidemiology and Control of Infectious Diseases. The requirements are (a) over 80% attendance, and (b) pass in the exercise and the examination.

Entry Requirements

Applications should have a graduate qualification in a health-related discipline from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, and preferably have at least two years working experience in a health-related setting.
Applicants are preferably to possess basic knowledge in epidemiology.
