On research, CEID leveraged on expertise both inside and outside the Faculty of Medicine in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Research portfolio followed the strategic directions recommended by the Advisory Boards, WHO SARS Scientific Research Advisory Committees, other international forum on emerging infectious diseases. SARS Research constitutes one unique domain pursued by CEID since its inception. Beginning 2005, an HIV Research Group was set up to support the rolling out of research projects on HIV epidemiology, treatment and control. Research on other emerging infections is in the pipeline. CEID research activities are coordinated by the Research Working Group. A monthly research meeting was held from June 2004 to discuss progress and plans of RFCID commissioned studies. Another series of monthly research meetings began from May 2005 to cover HIV research and other subjects of interest. As of June 2005, seed funds for new research were provided to 8 projects developed by affiliate members of the CEID.

Infections control is at the heart of programmes for enhancing our preparedness for infectious diseases in the health care setting. Our hospitals need to be better equipped with facilities to take care of patients with contagious diseases. Our health care workers need to be better prepared to combat infectious diseases. To prepare for future attacks of infectious disease epidemics, multidisciplinary collaboration was established, through the work of the Subcommittee on Preparedness for Infections.
